Hospice

Compassion, Comfort and Care.

Providing high-quality, compassionate care for end-of-life patients and their families. St. Barnabas Hospice is available seven days a week, 24 hours a day at St. Barnabas or in the privacy of the home.

Offering Compassion.

The hospice staff will provide the highest level of care in the most compassionate ways available. A nurse will meet with each family to discuss specific physical, emotional and spiritual needs, then work with an interdisciplinary team to develop a care plan to make sure that each patient's final days are spent with dignity and peace.

Respite care for loved ones is available to provide at-home caregivers with time to tend to needs outside the home.

Delivering Comfort.

Hospice services are offered to patients in the comfort of their own home, hospital or one of St. Barnabas' skilled nursing facilities. St. Barnabas Hospice includes:
o Nursing Services
o Pain Management
o Homemaker Services
o Rehabilitation Services
o Nutritional Guidance
o Bereavement Support and Counseling
o Spiritual Counseling
o Education
o Volunteer Services
o Respite Care for Loved Ones

One of the most important services St. Barnabas Hospice offers is pain management. The health care team works together to assess and manage pain through IV therapy and medications to ensure that your loved one remains as free of pain and symptoms as possible, yet still alert enough to make important decisions and engage in conversation.

Providing Care.

Members of the team will also visit regularly to make sure family members are comfortable with the care they are providing. And nursing assistance is just a phone call away as staff is available at any time, 24 hours a day, to answer questions and counsel family members as needed.

An interdisciplinary team manages care to provide services needed for the individual in the hospice setting. The team includes:
o Physicians
o Nurses
o Social Workers
o Certified Home Health Aides
o Spiritual Counselors
o Therapists
o Nutritionists
o Trained Volunteers

St. Barnabas Hospice is a Medicare-approved service. Medicare, Medicaid and most private insurance plans or HMOs typically cover the costs associated with hospice care. Additional funds may be available through the St. Barnabas Free Care Fund for individuals who cannot afford hospice care.

Volunteering.

Volunteers are sought by St. Barnabas Hospice to make a difference in the lives of terminally ill patients and their families. Volunteers can give as little or as much time as is suitable for their personal situation. Volunteers are needed to support families through such services as friendly visits, light housekeeping and errands. There are also volunteer opportunities for clerical duties in the office.

A free training program will be provided to those interested in volunteering with St. Barnabas Hospice. The training program will include:
o An introduction to hospice care
o Education on death, dying and grief
o Developing communication and support skills
