St. Barnabas Nursing Home Residents to Prepare for Newt Gingrich Visit
Activity scheduled for 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 11
Gibsonia, Pa. - March 29, 2006 - Residents of St. Barnabas Nursing Home, 5827 Meridian Road, will gather at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 11 to prepare for a visit by former Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives Newt Gingrich. The residents will create welcoming banners and mock campaign buttons and play a multiple choice game about Gingrich's career.
Additionally, in recognition of the bragging rights the entire Pittsburgh region is enjoying following the Steelers' Super Bowl victory, two residents, Rose Nwranski and Gertrude Brodka, will knit black and gold hats to be presented to Gingrich. The hats will be filled with items symbolizing the various roles or "hats" Gingrich has worn during his life and will be given to him by residents.
Gingrich will visit St. Barnabas Nursing Home at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, May 4, kicking off St. Barnabas' annual Founder's Day Celebration. At 7 p.m. that evening, he will be the featured speaker at a fund-raising dinner and program at the Omni William Penn Hotel. At the conclusion of the program, William V. Day, St. Barnabas Health System president, will present Gingrich with the coveted Hance Award, named for St. Barnabas founder Gouverneur P. Hance. The Hance Award is given annually to a person of national renown who exemplifies the ideals of Brother Hance and who has made a significant impact upon the lives of Americans.
Gingrich is well-known as the architect of the "Contract with America," which led the Republican Party to victory in 1994 by capturing the majority in the U.S. House for the first time in 40 years. After he was elected Speaker in 1995, he disrupted the status quo by moving power out of Washington and back to the American people. Under his leadership, Congress passed welfare reform, the first balanced budget in a generation, and the first tax cut in 16 years. Today, he is a highly sought after speaker, the author of nine books, chairman of the Gingrich Group, and a news and political analyst for Fox News Channel. He is widely considered to be a contender for the 2008 Republican presidential nomination.
Today, Mr. Gingrich is a highly sought after public speaker and a political analyst on Fox News. In his most recent book, "Winning the Future: A 21st Century Contract with America," he calls for sweeping reforms in Social Security, health care and Medicare.
