Heritage Foundation President to Receive Hance Award
Dr. Edwin J. Feulner Jr. to visit Pittsburgh on May 10

Gibsonia, Pa. - May 10, 2007 - Dr. Edwin J. Feulner Jr., president of The Heritage Foundation, Washington's leading public policy organization, will receive the 2007 Hance Award on Thursday, May 10, as part of St. Barnabas Charities' annual Founder's Day Celebration.

Founder's Day festivities will begin when Feulner visits St. Barnabas Nursing Home, 5827 Meridian Road, at 10:30 a.m. The bell of the historic building will be tolled in his honor. Feulner will be greeted by William V. Day, president of St. Barnabas Health System, as well as numerous staff members and residents. A brief welcoming ceremony will be conducted in the nursing home chapel. The welcoming ceremony will be led by Jim Roddey, former Allegheny County chief executive and a friend of Feulner's. Feulner will then tour the building to witness the compassionate, quality care St. Barnabas Nursing Home residents receive each day. Attendance at Feulner's nursing home visit is limited to residents and their families plus invited guests. Following the nursing home visit, Feulner will be the honored guest at an intimate fund-raising luncheon at The Washington Place at St. Barnabas.

Evening activities for Founder's Day will be held at the Omni William Penn Hotel in downtown Pittsburgh with an audience of 400 guests expected. A reception and silent auction will begin at 5:30 p.m., followed by dinner and a program at 7 p.m. At the conclusion of the program, Day will present Feulner with the St. Barnabas Hance Award, named for St. Barnabas founder Brother Gouverneur P. Hance. Upon receiving the award, Feulner will deliver a thought-provoking speech addressing issues of national and international concern.

Tickets to the Founder's Day evening program are $250, available by calling (724) 443-0700, Ext. 5258 or by visiting www.stbarnabashealthsystem.com. Corporate tables of 10 are $2,500.

Proceeds will benefit the St. Barnabas Free Care Fund, which in 2006 alone provided $5.8 million to patients at St. Barnabas Nursing Home, Valencia Woods at St. Barnabas and The Arbors at St. Barnabas who otherwise would not be able to afford their care. The signature sponsor of the 2007 Founder's Day Celebration is UPMC Health Plan.

St. Barnabas Health System leaders chose Feulner because of his commitment to the cause of freedom around the world and his development and leadership of an organization dedicated to the voice of reason and the underlying values of the Unites States. In receiving the Hance Award, he joins the ranks of past recipients such as former first lady Barbara Bush, U.S. astronaut Buzz Aldrin, and former Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives Newt Gingrich.

As president and co-founder of the Heritage Foundation, Feulner has played a central role in shaping and pushing the conservative agenda for more than three decades. In 1989, President Ronald Reagan conferred the Presidential Citizens Medal upon Feulner, calling him "a leader of the conservative movement." Feulner has helped turn the traditional notion of think tanks as drab centers of serious scholarship on its head. From its very first days in 1973, The Heritage Foundation has been devoted to turning its ideas and ideals into policy. Heritage pioneered the concept of concise messaging and using marketing to promote causes. Heritage's knowledgeable and respected experts are quoted daily in the nation's newspapers, magazines and on television and radio.
