"Steel Magnolias" takes place entirely in Truvy's Beauty Parlor in the small Louisiana town of Chinquapin. The outspoken Truvy dispenses shampoo and free advice to the town's rich curmudgeon, Ouiser; an eccentric millionaire, Miss Clairee; and the local social leader, M'Lynn, whose daughter, Shelby - the prettiest girl in town - is about to get married. Filled with hilarious repartee and several acerbic but humorously revealing verbal collisions, the story moves toward when the spunky Shelby, who is diabetic, risks pregnancy. The women unify in friendship and love.
